No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Over 300 years ago cruel treatments including torture and beheadings were standard practice in The Hague. Three axes were used by an executioner for decapitations, and a small knife for chopping off limbs. Prisoners received one out of three possible punishments; public shaming, corporal punishment, or the death penalty. Nowadays, punishments should be of value to society, and prisoners reintegrated into the community. Inhuman practices have stopped being part of the Dutch culture since 1828.

The Prison Gate belongs to one of the most iconic buildings of The Hague, beautifully situated next to the Hofvijver. Initially, the Prison Gate was the entrance to the castle of the Counts of Holland. For many years following, this building served as a prison for the Court of Holland. Nowadays, the museum tells the story of crime and punishment across the centuries.

Niemand zal onderworpen worden aan folteringen, noch aan een wrede, onmenselijke of onterende behandeling of bestraffing.

Ruim 300 jaar geleden waren martelen, wrede behandelingen en onthoofdingen onderdeel van de Haagse cultuur. De drie bijlen werden door een beul gebruikt voor onthoofdingen en het kleinere mes voor het afhakken van ledematen. Gevangen kregen in principe maar één uit drie straffen: een schandstraf, een lijfstraf of de doodstraf. Tegenwoordig dient een straf van waarde te zijn voor de maatschappij en gevangenen horen te re-integreren in de maatschappij. De inhumane praktijken zijn sinds 1828 niet meer onderdeel van de Nederlandse cultuur.

Museum de Gevangenpoort is een icoon in Den Haag, prachtig gelegen aan de Hofvijver. In de 13de eeuw vormde dit gebouw de imposante toegangspoort tot het Binnenhof. Enkele eeuwen later werd het een gevangenis en gerechtsgebouw van het machtige Hof van Holland. Hier wachtten verdachte misdadigers op hun proces en werden wanbetalers opgesloten. Tegenwoordig vertelt Museum de Gevangenpoort het spannende verhaal van misdaad en straf in voorbije tijden.
